Mise-en-scene blog task

Create a blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene blog tasks' on your Media 2 coursework blog and complete the following tasks from your Film and TV Language booklet:

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

Mise-en-scene analysis
Costume
The adult male in this image seen wearing clothing and equipment that is typically seen to be worn by soldiers that are deployed to other countries to either fight or protect civilians. The choice of this costume coveys his role in society in this still image to the viewer.

The male child is wearing standard clothing seen worn by teenagers or children. However, his clothes appear to be tarnished and ruined by mud or black smoke. The ruined and stained clothing is used to present to the viewer that he has been involved in an incident that has left his clothes discoloured.

Lighting

Back-light is used to separate the two subjects from the background, this appears to be the main light source within the shot. Kye light is used and fill light is also incorporated to fill in potential shadows created by the key light.

Actors

The actors are both knelt behind a wall. Along with the costume, this could indicate that they are hiding or taking cover. The soldier is seen holding the young child back from taking off. The positioning of the child's legs is showing that he wants to go run to in the direction that they are looking at. The soldier holding the child back could imply that he is trying to protect him.

Makeup

The only makeup seen on the two actors is black makeup on their faces to resemble dirt or ashes. This was deliberately used along with the tarnished clothes to make it appear like they have been involved in conflict ore an accident.

Props
Only props seen within this freeze frame is the utility belt worn by the older male. This further emphasises his role as a character

Setting
The buildings surrounding the two actors appear to made out of stone and have a cream/beige colour to them. Buildings of this material and colour are usually seen in the middle east. This, along with the race of the younger child, could indicate that this is set in the middle east a country that is not western.

The Nun; Mise-en-scene Analysis

This scene is set in a house. The interior design of the house seen is quite old fashioned. The wallpaper is a big indicator that this house as a set is used to convey the time period that this movie was set in. The character's costume also portrays the year that this movie takes place in. The colours used in this scene are quite muted. The clothing worn by the mother and the child contains muted colours; browns and greys and creams are the main colour palettes. This is reflected in the colour scheme of the home. Choosing to make bright colour limited could be used to put more focus on the main characters. Dim lighting is used throughout this scene to create enigma for what is in the dark and build tension. The lack of lighting creates dark shadows on the characters face to add a mysterious element to the characters.

John Wick; Mise-e-scene analysis

The scene is set in a museum and it appears to be a celebration of some sort as people are gathered drinking beverages in slim wine glasses and are all wearing formal clothing. The
wine glasses used are usually seen in movies containing scenes of formal gatherings. The clothing worn by the actors is used to indicate their social status and justify their attendance to a museum opening. This conveys a sense of wealth and authority, especially from the character John Wick. When close up shots are used on John Wick and the other male protagonist, lighting is used to create a shadow on their face. This shadow is used to create mystery. The expression on their faces also adds to this mystery. It raises questions for the audience as to why they are looking at each other like that. In terms of makeup, John Wick already has blood on his forehead before he has conflict inside of the museum. This portrays to the view that he has already been in a disruption. This along with the way he is looking at the other male protagonist across the room could foreshadow to the view that additional conflict will commence

Music Video: Common - Letter to the Free Social and cultural context Common has been involved in a project with  John Legend in which these two successful artists wrote  Glory  as the soundtrack for  Selma. Selma was a  2014 film portraying the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches, a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement The 13th Amendment of the American Constitution was passed on January 31 1865 and it was to abolish slavery in the United States and provides that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist in the US. The Black Codes were laws in the Southern states that had an intent of restricting African American's freedom to   ensure their availability as a cheap labour force after slavery was abolished during the Civil War People suggest that the legacy of slavery is still a crucial aspect of American culture 150 years after it was abolished by the 13th Amendment. This is because a lot of sacrifices were made to reach that point. Countless fighting and lives taken res
